JAKARTA — Former Indonesian Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati has been officially appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Gates Foundation, the global philanthropic organization founded by Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates.

The appointment marks a new chapter in Sri Mulyani’s engagement on the international philanthropic stage. She said she was both honored and motivated to contribute her extensive experience in economics and financial reform to advance global humanitarian missions.

“I am honored to join the Gates Foundation Board and to contribute at such a pivotal moment—one filled with both challenges and opportunities,” Sri Mulyani said in a statement published on the Gates Foundation’s official website on Tuesday (January 13, 2026).

Her inclusion is widely viewed as strategic, particularly as the Gates Foundation has committed to spending its entire endowment over the next 20 years. The ambitious plan focuses on three core priorities: reducing maternal and infant mortality, eradicating deadly infectious diseases, and lifting millions of people out of poverty toward sustainable prosperity.

Sri Mulyani emphasized that the next two decades will be critical in ensuring tangible and lasting impact for the world’s most vulnerable populations.

“With 20 years to deliver the greatest possible impact for those who need it most,” she said.

Sri Mulyani’s background as a globally respected economist—who has led major reforms across national and international financial institutions—is expected to strengthen the foundation’s governance and policy effectiveness.

Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman said her presence would bring valuable insight to the board, particularly in ensuring the foundation’s resources are deployed efficiently and strategically.

“Her leadership will help expand opportunity, foster inclusive economic growth, and drive stronger outcomes for communities around the world,” Suzman said.

On the Board of Directors, Sri Mulyani will work alongside prominent global figures including Ashish Dhawan, Helene Gayle, Strive Masiyiwa, Thomas J. Tierney, and Bill Gates himself. Meanwhile, Baroness Minouche Shafik is currently on leave while serving as an economic adviser to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
