KiniMedia — A deadly school shooting has shaken the city of Kahramanmaras, Turkey, on Wednesday (April 15), leaving nine people dead and 13 others injured, with at least six victims reported in critical condition.

Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci stated that several of the injured are undergoing intensive medical treatment, including emergency surgeries.

According to Mukerrem Unluer, the attacker was an eighth-grade male student at Ayser Calik Secondary School. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

Authorities reported that the suspect brought a firearm concealed in his backpack before entering the school premises and opening fire indiscriminately into two classrooms.

The perpetrator also died during the incident. However, officials have not yet clarified the exact circumstances of his death, including whether it was self-inflicted.

Preliminary findings suggest the weapon used may have belonged to the suspect’s father, a former police officer. The attacker was reportedly carrying multiple firearms and ammunition magazines at the time of the shooting.

An intensive investigation is currently underway. Chief Prosecutor Ramazan Murat Tiryaki confirmed that a special team of prosecutors has been deployed to handle the case.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek stated that a comprehensive investigation is being conducted at the scene, while Education Minister Yusuf Tekin has traveled to the location to oversee the response and ensure proper handling of victims.

The incident has reignited global concerns over school safety, particularly regarding access to firearms and the protection of students within educational environments.
