ABU DHABI — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto shared an iftar meal with United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Thursday (February 26, 2026), in a gesture underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations during the holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement posted on his official Instagram account, President Prabowo described the gathering as an important moment to deepen friendship and expand strategic cooperation between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. He emphasized the importance of bilateral collaboration in promoting prosperity for both countries.

Diplomatically, meetings held in a religious setting carry both symbolic and political significance. Beyond reinforcing personal rapport between leaders, such occasions often serve as informal platforms to discuss key issues including investment, energy cooperation, and cross-border strategic projects.

President Prabowo arrived in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday (February 25) aboard the presidential aircraft Garuda Indonesia-1. He was welcomed by UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Al Mazrouei, Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE Judha Nugraha, and senior officials from both countries.

The visit is considered strategically significant, as the UAE remains one of Indonesia’s principal partners in the Middle East, particularly in renewable energy investment, infrastructure development, and the development of Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara.

Upon arrival at his hotel, President Prabowo was also greeted by Indonesian students and members of the diaspora community in the UAE. Among them was Naufal Ahmad Sofyan, a student at the Muhammad bin Zayed University for Humanities, who expressed enthusiasm after meeting the Indonesian head of state.

Amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and intensifying global investment competition, personal diplomacy plays an increasingly strategic role. Indonesia–UAE relations have strengthened in recent years, though the consistency of project implementation and tangible outcomes will remain the primary benchmark of success.

The iftar meeting in Abu Dhabi thus represents more than a Ramadan ceremony; it reflects Indonesia’s active diplomacy in expanding and consolidating strategic partnerships across the Gulf region.
