Pyongyang – North Korea escalated regional security tensions on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) by launching multiple ballistic missiles into the sea, coinciding with strategic discussions between the United States and South Korea on adjusting Washington’s military posture toward Pyongyang.
South Korea’s military said the missiles were believed to be short-range ballistic missiles. According to Reuters, the launches took place from the Pyongyang area at approximately 3:50 p.m. local time, with the projectiles traveling about 350 kilometers before landing in waters off North Korea’s eastern coast. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the details shortly after the launch.
Separately, Japan’s Coast Guard also detected what appeared to be a ballistic missile launch from North Korea. The object reportedly fell into the sea several minutes later. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the launch posed no immediate threat to Japanese territory.
North Korea has intensified testing of short-range missiles and multiple rocket launch systems in recent months. Pyongyang claims these weapons are part of efforts to strengthen its tactical nuclear capabilities, which it says are necessary to counter what it describes as growing military threats from the United States and South Korea.
International scrutiny of North Korea’s weapons programs has increased further following revelations that Pyongyang has supplied arms to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine. Military ties between the two countries have deepened since the signing of a mutual defense pact in 2024.
Analysts view the latest missile launch as both a political and military signal aimed at Washington and Seoul, reinforcing Pyongyang’s determination to continue advancing its military capabilities amid an increasingly complex global geopolitical landscape.
