JAKARTA — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s official visit to the United Kingdom carries a strategic mission that goes far beyond formal diplomacy. From strengthening maritime cooperation to advancing wildlife conservation, the trip marks a new chapter in long-term Indonesia–UK relations.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi revealed that one of the visit’s key outcomes will be the signing of a Maritime Partnership Agreement, focusing on cooperation in the marine sector, including the joint construction of fishing vessels for Indonesian fishermen.

“The President will sign a maritime cooperation agreement, particularly to build fishing vessels for our fishermen,” Prasetyo said at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday (January 19, 2026).

The initiative is viewed not merely as an infrastructure project, but as a strategic effort to strengthen coastal economic independence, facilitate shipbuilding technology transfer, and improve the livelihoods of fishermen as the backbone of Indonesia’s maritime economy.

During his stay in the UK, President Prabowo is scheduled to meet King Charles III and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The high-level meetings were initially planned for December 2025 but were postponed to January 2026.

Notably, Prabowo’s engagement with King Charles III also places environmental issues at the center of bilateral diplomacy. The two leaders are set to discuss the continuation of elephant conservation cooperation in Aceh. According to Prasetyo, around eight to ten months ago, Prabowo personally handed over a forest concession owned by PT Tusam Hutani Lestari to the government, allowing it to be converted into an elephant conservation corridor—an initiative coordinated with King Charles.

“This reflects the President’s concrete commitment to wildlife and environmental protection,” Prasetyo said.

Beyond maritime and environmental cooperation, President Prabowo will also explore educational partnerships with leading British universities affiliated with the Russell Group. The discussions include potential collaboration to establish new university campuses in Indonesia, particularly in fields where the country seeks to accelerate progress, such as technology, science, and medicine.

Following his UK visit, Prabowo will travel to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF). The President is scheduled to participate as a speaker while also expanding Indonesia’s global network and strategic partnerships.

“This forum is part of a broader strategy to open global collaboration opportunities for Indonesia,” Prasetyo concluded.

The visit underscores Indonesia’s evolving diplomatic posture under President Prabowo Subianto—one that prioritizes strategic collaboration with tangible benefits for grassroots economic sectors, environmental sustainability, and the future development of human capital.
