KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, has voiced strong disappointment over the prevalence of corruption within the Malaysian Armed Forces (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia/ATM), including cases allegedly involving senior military officers.
The remarks were delivered during the opening of the First Session of the 15th Term of the Malaysian Parliament in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (January 19), following reports of graft that have tarnished the country’s defense institution.
“I am deeply disappointed to see corruption cases occurring within the Malaysian Armed Forces, reaching even the highest levels. At this rate, perhaps I should appoint only a sergeant to become the Chief of the Armed Forces,” Sultan Ibrahim said, in a pointed remark underscoring his frustration.
The King expressed his belief that the corruption cases exposed within the ATM likely represent only a fraction of similar practices occurring across other public institutions, including customs and excise, immigration, the police force, and even the legislative branch. He stressed that such practices must be investigated comprehensively and addressed at their root.
Sultan Ibrahim warned that national planning and development would never be fully effective as long as corruption continues to undermine public institutions. He therefore called for a large-scale and uncompromising war against corruption across all sectors.
He also urged the public to play an active role in reporting any indications of graft. “Not only those who receive bribes must be arrested, but also the givers and the agents involved must face action,” he asserted.
Furthermore, Sultan Ibrahim pressed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) to conduct all investigations swiftly, firmly, and professionally. He also called on the government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to ensure that experienced judges are appointed to handle corruption cases, so that legal proceedings can be carried out effectively and credibly.
In closing, Sultan Ibrahim emphasized that corrupt individuals — as well as those who protect them — are traitors to the nation. He reminded public officials and members of parliament of their duty to uphold the people’s trust with integrity and a strong sense of responsibility.
