SUBANG — Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD (Build Your Dreams) is accelerating its expansion in Indonesia, reaffirming its commitment to the country’s rapidly growing automotive market. The company is targeting the start of operations at its BYD assembly plant in Subang, West Java, in the first quarter of 2026.
BYD Auto Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division General Manager Liu Xueliang said the manufacturing facility will serve as a strategic production base to meet domestic demand while also opening opportunities for regional exports.
In its initial phase, the Subang plant is designed to have an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles. However, BYD emphasized that the capacity remains flexible and may be expanded in line with market growth.
“We are planning production of around 150,000 units per year. Should market demand continue to rise, we will adjust and expand capacity accordingly,” Liu said on Thursday (January 15, 2026).
Notably, BYD will not operate the Subang plant as a single-model facility. The company confirmed that multiple electric vehicle models will be assembled locally, reflecting BYD’s long-term strategy to build a broad and diversified EV portfolio in Indonesia.
The establishment of BYD’s Subang plant is widely regarded as a key milestone in Indonesia’s electric vehicle industrialization drive. Local production is expected to significantly reduce logistics and import costs, enabling more competitively priced EVs for the Indonesian market.
Beyond cost efficiencies, the investment is projected to strengthen Indonesia’s green industrial ecosystem, create employment opportunities, and accelerate technology transfer within the clean-energy automotive sector.
BYD’s move underscores that Indonesia is no longer viewed merely as a consumer market, but is being positioned as a strategic electric vehicle manufacturing hub for Southeast Asia.
